Capel's Mill Footbridge

1/2

At Capel Mill to the east of Stroud town centre, the canal towpath crosses from one side of the canal to the other, and the continuous canal-side walk is broken. Pedestrians are forced to leave the path to cross the canal and walk along the busy traffic bridge that is confusing, relying on signage, as well as being unpleasant and dangerous.

In the early days of the canal restoration, a bridge was planned for this site but was not realised due to restrictions of funds.
At present, the towpath comes to an abrupt end at the railway viaduct, requiring people to turn back and retrace the steps in order to cross the canal.

Have a look at the concept drawings below of the proposed footbridge across the canal, and answer the questions that follow.
