Overall, how do you feel about Option 1?

Mostly negative

Do you have any other thoughts/comments/suggestions about Option 1?

The design of the buildings are uninspiring and could be anywhere architecture. The corner plot is on a busy road where sitting and enjoying a coffee or catch up with friends would not be a pleasant area compared to others in Stroud. Maintaining the built environment to protect from this erosion and retaining the historic street pattern would respond to the character of the area.

Overall, how do you feel about Option 2?

Do you have any other thoughts/comments/suggestions about Option 2?

The design of the building is slightly more interesting than option 1 but still lacks any relevance to Stroud and its historic character. Unnecessary for this area to be utilized as public realm to retain the built form and strong sense of street enclosure here.

Do you have any other thoughts/comments/suggestions about Option 3?

The building being split could work well but the design is dreadful. Reuse the host building and remove the public realm. Not a pleasant area for sitting due to being a busy road.

Do you think any of the options meet the aspiration of "..improved pedestrian accessibility at the London Road/Cornhill junction and to the Brunel Mall car park…"?

No

How could accessibility be improved in this location?

Yes improved paving to the existing street scene but does not need a large expanse of open space on this corner.

Is the open space in front of the buildings a positive addition to the area?

No

How do you think this space should be designed and used?

Retain the historic building and reuse. Options for pop up uses to GF and resi above. Could include elements of demolition to the corner of the site or improved public realm to this area. No need for large area of public realm to corner.

Whilst I am not against some redevelopment , I does not think the design relates to the rest of the town! I think there is scope for a much more sympathetic and attractive approach to this development! All the designs are rather anonymous blocks as an attempt to make a big statement and go very modern!

Do you have any other thoughts/comments/suggestions about Option 3?

All three options do not appeal to me! The market tavern quarter development could be an exciting project linking the top of Union Street to the lower tavern area! I would like to suggest that a statement arch would make a great entrance to this gateway into town! I think it is a shame that the old market tavern is not considered for re purpose! Its has a long history and once called ( The Union) hence Union Street! Why not retain the outside of the building, even if it is gutted inside, this could be a great place for a tourist information and glass gallery extension, showcasing local art and books ! Since its the year of The Coronation, there could be celebrated by further installations, ie: a music podium, commissioned bronze of Mr Budding with lawn mower?!

Do you think any of the options meet the aspiration of "..improved pedestrian accessibility at the London Road/Cornhill junction and to the Brunel Mall car park…"?

I don't think any of the designs meet the aspiration of the town! A far more interesting and sympathetic approach is needed! Viewing Union Street from the upper end, it is quite a charming street with the old arch of the former Swan Inn, I think the lower Market tavern area could be linked with a distinguishing arch, since its a gateway into town! I would like to see more vision and a link to past and present!

How could accessibility be improved in this location?

Make a distinctive prominent archway liking lower Union Street to the the upper part! Resurfacing the road area attractively and repurposing are historic buildings!

This is urban vandalism at its worst. The current Market Tavern should be incorporated into a contemporary re-development - with the open space at the rear, away from the traffic.

London road should be pedestrianised - BUT you don't need to demolish a viable heritage building to do it. Keep the tavern and develop a garden/open space away from the traffic in the garden. Don't be fooled by the people dotted on the forecourt in the graphic - why would anyone want to stand there!

Why two parallel streets? Why the grim blank walls along Union St - great for graffiti? Why do you need to demolish a perfectly good building to redevelop the site - a decent design should be able to combine old and new

How could accessibility be improved in this location?

Keep the Union Tavern building but pedestrianize London Rd - QED

Is the open space in front of the buildings a positive addition to the area?

Better to have the open space away from the traffic

The proposals should protect and enhance the Farmers' Market. Do you think they do this? Could they be improved upon?

No - having the open space uphill of the Tavern would mean the space would be integrated into the Farmers Market - for performance or additional stalls - that would enhance the market.

The existing building should not be demolished! It is of historical value and fits into the townscape, but sadly is looking very dilapidated now. So it needs to be restored and a useful purpose found for it which benefits the community. Replacing it with a characterless modern building makes no sense.

same comment as for Option 1 I do not think there is a need for a lot of open space in this part of Stroud, but some could be created behind the existing Market Tavern and the market area. This space is wasteland at the moment, so could easily be made into a small park area. It would be much better in this location than right by London Road where there is a lot of traffic. In general, Stroud should improve the spaces and buildings it has, rather than demolishing them. If there is capacity for building, please focus on creating affordable housing for people!

There is no great problem with accessing the car park at the moment. Encourage people to come to town by public transport rather than focussing on car parks!

The proposals should protect and enhance the Farmers' Market. Do you think they do this? Could they be improved upon?

The Framers' Market is already thriving and full of character! Focus on improving other facilities in the town centre would seem more important.
